As a mental health counselor, Charlene finds that patients are often unaware of the way in which events from their past continue to influence their emotions and behaviors, and because of this they may experience unexplained aversions, self-sabotaging behaviors, phobias and chronic physical problems. Charlene values the holistic approach embraced by NET, which allows her to address a multitude of facets (emotional components, toxicity, nutritional and structural components) within an individual, in a relatively simple way. She explains, “NET is like using a laser to get to the root of the issue in a very short period of time.” As a result patients gain insight and awareness, which helps to reduce their reactivity and helps them to meet their goals.

Charlene describes a male client who was a recovering alcoholic and came to her for help and support after a relapse. This client was also experiencing a high degree of reactivity towards particular relatives (e.g. in-laws) and this pattern was becoming problematic for the relationships within his immediate family. After receiving NET treatments in his counseling sessions, he later reported that he had been at events with the extended family and was able to interact with them without becoming reactive, angry or hostile. With regards to his sobriety, NET was used as an additional way to help him stay sober by dealing with the issues that trigger him.

Charlene would love to see NET’s profile raised within the mental health community. She hopes to see more research done on NET’s application within the counseling field and would like to see mental health practitioners who have NET certification publish case studies. She herself is interested in doing a study that includes both patient’s self-reporting and measurements of the autonomic nervous system to demonstrate the physiological difference NET is making. Charlene feels it’s very important to get NET research published in journals frequently read by those working within the mental health disciplines so practitioners become more aware of the technique and the powerful impact it has.
